As such this is a great translation of the original to Quake 3. Overall, all these changes make for a fast, intense, and fun experience. I was always around playing at Polish Lans and in online tournaments streaming Quake Live, making tutorials and always dreaming about being somebody in this scene and game that I truly love. Textures are loyal to the original map, but with improved lighting (for some reason, as a former Quake 2 player myself, tolerance for dark maps was significant that is not the case in Quake 3). Im playing Quake for 20 years I did participate in my very first Quake 3 Arena duel tournament when I was 11 years old. For instance, RA is moved to the main room (which got downgraded by replacing the rocket launcher with the plasma gun), a clever way of spreading the balance across rooms (the original one had the RA in a hard to get place, and literally next to the railgun). Another great change is the new location of the railgun. Water level is lowered on the main room, to make space for more room for fighting. Makes sense so far, right Well try this: This gun looks like a beam weapon, and should have type Bulletbeam, but other than that its a projectile weapon.

Connectivity between rooms is greatly improved with some extra passages, windows and teleports. But also, the map is larger, giving plenty of more space for those amazing open fights for which Q3 is better suited than Q2 (giving extra relevance to the railgun). Plenty of bouncers instead of lifts, for a start, make a significant change in game speed.
This must not be a surprise, since the author is one of the best mappers out there, sst13. On the contrary, this is the only conversion, in my opinion, that can actually translate the original's intensity into Quake 3's unique style. But it is not yet another nostalgic remake for fans. Lastly, try to get good at the railgun yourself, its an extremely effective weapon and will help you fight back against teams who use this as a strategy to defend. This is yet another conversion of the Quake 2 map Tokay Towers, released in August 2019. Its effective at long ranges against railers (if they aren't very good) as some railers usually stand still while they aim, you can pop out chuck a few plasma bullets at em. Every purchase you make puts money in an artist’s pocket. Find Railgun-inspired gifts and merchandise printed on quality products one at a time in socially responsible ways. Having said all that, Railgunning (is that the right word ha!) is an effective defensive strategy for defence in CTF games as usually the attackers will be at distance upon arriving in your base to which defenders can snipe at them with rails.Īlso if you are no good at sniping back with rails, may I suggest playing peekaboo with the plasma gun. T-shirts, stickers, wall art, home decor, and more designed and sold by independent artists. This throws a railgun "whore" off balance and they will usually try to retract to gain distance from you. There are so many tactics to combat railgun players, the best of which is to get into the "short" distance range and attack with your favourite/best weapon. Not many are efficient at using it for short range as the reload time is slow, its not viable to take a player head on with it. The thing about the Railgun is, its an excellent medium to long range weapon. If you're lucky enough it'll fall downstairs for a teammate to grab. If you get knocked off the map, try your luck and drop the flag (you have bound that command, haven't you?). Plus, you get obvious bragging rights for pulling this off in a real game, with people like shooting at you and stuff. It won't work eight times, but it might just be the move that changes the game. If you have to take the lower route, consider trickier ways to climb on the top like climbing your way on the vertical pillars with rocket jumps or plasma climbing. If you know the enemy is camping your flag pole (something fairly safe to assume), you might want to forego the quicker but more dangerous lower routes by taking the main route, or better yet the not-as-frequented lateral ones. I don't recall the railgun being as "overpowered" on this map. (IIRC, it's trivial to enter middle with 25 rockets, while keeping your weapons stocked up while camping middle is trickier indeed.)Īs for Rebound. "Railwhores" will need to confront you on your terms, but don't assume that just because they spend ungodly amount of times camping portals with the railgun it doesn't mean they're not proficient with the rocket launcher. It's unsurprising that keeping a hold on this area is not an easy task, but if you can do it your team will gain quite the edge over the enemy team. This area is also important to control for the megahealth below and for being generally the fastest way to cap. You can counter the railgun spam on Vortex Portal by taking control of middle, the only place (IIRC) where the railgun weapon and ammo spawns.
